Peg Palmer Named Literacy Advocate of the Year
Milwaukee Achiever’s Executive Director, Peg Palmer, has been name “Literacy Advocate of the Year” by Wisconsin Literacy, a statewide coalition of literacy organizations created to promote literacy through resource development, referrals, training and advocacy.
The award is given to an outstanding administrator, donor or business partner who has done the most to raise awareness and funding for literacy.
The award will be presented at Wisconsin Literacy’s 8th Annual Celebration of Literacy at Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. This year’s keynote speaker for the luncheon will be award-winning Wisconsin author Jane Hamilton.
Milwaukee Achiever’s Bilingual Medical Interpreter training program also won honorable mention in the Health Literacy category. The program is an intensive training process that prepares adults who are fluent in both English and Spanish to both work in a healthcare setting, and ease the process of healthcare delivery to an underserved population. Congratulations to Anne Roets, Milwaukee Achiever Workforce Development Director, and Beatrice Armstrong, Milwaukee Achiever Bilingual Medical Interpreter Instructor, for designing and implementing an award-winning, multi-faceted curriculum.
