Gloria Scherr

Gloria Scherr passed away February 14, 2009.  She was a widow who began volunteering at Milwaukee Achiever nearly six years ago.  Reading and gardening were her favorite hobbies.  She loved meeting learners from other cultures, and made many friends during her Saturday morning tutoring sessions.  Gloria even took on transportation duties for one of her first learners who had broken his leg in the winter and had trouble getting on the bus.  Gloria decided to pick him up and drop him off, so he wouldn’t miss any of their sessions together.

Gloria was a former employee of U.S. Bank , where she worked as an account specialist.  She had two children and four grandchildren, and all of them were very important to her.  She always scheduled tutoring around musical events where her grandchildren were performing on their instruments.  Most of them played in the downtown Christmas parade, so she never scheduled a tutoring session on the last Saturday of November.

Michael Grossman, a fellow tutor/volunteer, spearheaded the “Gloria’s Garden” beautification project, which was held at Pierce Center on May 30, 2009.  The two of them often tried new restaurants together after tutoring on Saturdays.  Gloria’s daughter, Yvonne Detert, was at Pierce Center the day of the event with two of Gloria’s grandchildren.
