Greater Milwaukee Foundation and Erica P. John Fund Award Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services Matching $30,000 Grants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 21, 2009

MILWAUKEE . . . Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services recently received $60,000 from a $30,000 challenge grant from the Erica P. John Fund, formerly known as the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Supporting Fund (AMS Fund), and matched by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Walter and Olive Stiemke Fund. These two capital grants have been targeted to cover the expenses incurred in the relocation and renovation of Milwaukee Achiever’s Silver Spring Center, including the installation of a new heating and cooling system.

Due to the increasing number of adults seeking one-on-one tutoring and area businesses/industries seeking workforce literacy for their employees, many of them on the northwest side of the city, Milwaukee Achiever relocated its Silver Spring Center from 3410 West Silver Spring Drive to 5566 North 69th Street. The new location in the rectory/parish office of the former St. Philip Neri Parish is very spacious with 6,825 square feet spread over three floors, providing space for classrooms, computer labs, and offices. The additional space provided by this funding will accommodate approximately 200 adult learners.

“This funding is helping us reach more people who need educational and workforce skills in order to find and maintain employment, especially in these difficult economic times. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to work collaboratively with these two prominent foundations to accomplish our mission,” stated Peg Palmer, executive director of Milwaukee Achiever.

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation is a family of nearly 1,000 individual charitable funds, each created by donors to serve the local charitable causes of their choice. Grants from these funds serve people throughout Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties. Started in 1915, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the United States.

Founded in 1992, the Erica P. John Fund, formerly known as the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Supporting Fund (AMS Fund), was formed to support a limited number of charitable organizations, predominantly those within the auspices of the Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services (www.milwaukeeachiever.org) offers one-on-one/small group tutoring in Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED/HSED preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), citizenship and computer skills, and workforce development at two neighborhood learning centers located at 1512 West Pierce Street (414-643-0176, ext. 105) and 5566 North 69th Street (414-463-7389). Volunteer tutors are needed at each center. Interested persons should call for more information.

Milwaukee Achiever also provides the educational component of the MAXIMUS Welfare to Work (W2) program with learning labs located in the MAXIMUS centers at 6550 North 76th Street and 1304 South 70th Street. Additionally, Milwaukee Achiever has a learning lab at Cherry Court (1525 North 24th Street), a low-income housing community sponsored by the City of Milwaukee Housing Authority.
