Two years ago, Milwaukee Achiever honored Rosemary Welter, RSM, with a 20 year award and a standing ovation for her years of volunteer service. Sadly, Sister Rosemary passed away on April 5, 2009. She was a Sister of Mercy of the Americas for 68 years and belonged to the Regional Community of Chicago, now known as the West Midwest Region.
In 1987, while still working full time as a dietitian, Sister Rosemary became a tutor at the original 931 West Madison Street site. Throughout the years, she worked mainly with immigrant women who were adjusting to life in a new country. Because she had learned to speak Spanish while working as a missionary in Peru, Rosemary understood the difficulty and necessity of learning another language to survive in a foreign country.
Sister Rosemary welcomed new challenges. Several years ago, she took all the computer courses offered by Milwaukee Achiever and began helping fellow students in her classes who were struggling to master the computer. She became such a valuable assistant and mentor that Milwaukee Achiever hired her as a part-time computer lab assistant at Pierce and Silver Spring Centers.
Rosemary also worked with the development coordinator, acting as liaison between Milwaukee Achiever and her religious community. The Sisters of Mercy have given Milwaukee Achiever $235,000 over the past thirteen years!
“I’ve had fun!” said Rosemary as she graciously accepted her award two years ago. And fun it has been for her many learners and all of us who have had the privilege to know and work with her. The joy she brought to Milwaukee Achiever was energizing and inspirational to all of us! We will miss her.
