My name is Sharlet Houston. I go to Milwaukee Achiever at MAXIMUS Southwest. Before I enrolled here, I was going to Vincent High School. My first year there was ok. Then my second year became an issue. I didn’t like it at all. My biggest regret was quitting. As soon as it got to be a little tough, I started to skip school and got suspended. Then I had a fight that caused me to get kicked out of MPS.
My parents were very disappointed. They always wanted me to succeed and achieve my goals, which were to stay in school and to go on to college. But because of my bad decision-making, I ended up in an alternative school. Once in this school I dropped out two years later because of my teachers’ lack of educational support.
I had lost all motivation for my goals. I wanted to succeed but was just afraid to try again.
Then I picked myself up and tried again. The teachers here at the learning lab have given me opportunities and strength. They have shown patience, sincerity and willingness to listen to me and how I feel on those days that aren’t going so good. They teach easier methods of learning to help us in our weaker areas. They assure us that it’s not easy, but it’s also not impossible.
My whole way of thinking has changed. I learned that a challenge can be a good thing. This program has shown me that in every way. My life has been a journey. Now I know I will achieve my goal of receiving my GED or HSED and going to college and other studies.
I want to take up my own fashion line and receive a business management degree. Who knows, with a good education and a good attitude, my road to success may take me beyond the stars! I know that it won’t be all that easy, but I feel more confident in succeeding on my journey to success.
