JobLink – Adult Literacy and Workforce Development
Illiteracy hurts business! There’s a serious and rapidly growing skilled-worker shortage in the Milwaukee area, where the adult illiteracy rate is currently over 27%, and the high school drop-out rate is higher than the national average. About half of the applicants (including many who have high school diplomas) seeking to enter local job-training programs like BIG STEP, WRTP, and IBEW Great Lakes Training need remedial reading and math instruction before they can qualify for apprenticeships or better jobs.
Eighty percent of employers nationwide, across all industries, report that half of their employees have low-level reading and communication skills, and about forty percent lack basic math skills. Most state that their employees’ low literacy levels prevent their companies from implementing new projects or expanding their businesses.
Milwaukee Achiever’s JobLink Program helps employers develop critically needed basic skills in their employees by providing instruction in adult basic education, English as a second language, high school equivalency, computer skills, and workplace-specific literacy. JobLink also helps unemployed and underemployed adults gain the skills necessary to enter job-training, obtain a job and/or advance in the workplace.
Our professional workplace-literacy educators design programs to meet the specific needs of individual businesses. Instruction is provided at one of our conveniently located learning centers or at the work site. An individualized learning plan is developed for each learner, and instruction is provided in one-on-one sessions and/or small group classes.
