One hundred percent (100%) of our total population are considered members of marginalized cultural, ethnic, or socio-economic groups.
Ethnic
Current learners represent forty countries and various ethnic groups: 0.7% African, 54.7% African American, 9.4% American Caucasian, 2% Asian, 2.7% European Caucasian, 29.3% Hispanic, 0.7% Native American, and 0.5% other (Jamaican).
Gender
Thirty-one percent (31%) of current learners are men, and sixty-nine percent (69%) are women. Many are young mothers (some single parents) who did not complete high school; several are older women returning to school to increase their self-esteem and set an example for their children/grandchildren.
Age
All learners are at least eighteen (18) years old. Many current learners are middle-age.
Employment
Many of our learners are entry-level immigrants with 62% of them employed (53% full-time and 9% part-time) at minimum wage/low-level jobs (food service, laundry, etc.). The majority of adult learners, even though employed, have incomes at or below 175% of the federal poverty level, and many of them have families to support.
Number
Approximately 720 adult learners utilize our services annually. A total of 18,000 adult learners have been served since our founding in 1983, and 1,496 adult learners were served in 2008.
Geographic Area
Generally, the learners live in the Milwaukee central city neighborhoods near our learning centers.
